Conclusions

It is technically and economically viable to provide power generation from the co-products of whisky distillation.

Balmenach Distillery

For Balmenach Distillery our recommendation is;

  1. Utilise the liquid co-products (Pot Ale and Spent Lees) within an anaerobic digester to produce methane fule.
  2. An electrical generator can then use this fuel to fulfill the electrical demands of the distillery with the surplus exported to the national grid.
  3. Exhaust gases from the generator can then be utilised by a waste heat boiler to offset the steam requirements of the stills.
  4. This results in an annual economic benefit of £178,450 and a payback period of 5 years.
