What are they?

Standards, specifications, regulations and protocols ensure that things work properly, interactively and responsibly. They provide specific values to benefit the development of a project and attempt to ensure that all the requirements are met. They are a combination of best practices, lessons learned and recent research results. In the case of offshore structures specifically, the intention through their application is to achieve the appropriate reliability levels for manned and unmanned structures that secure the safety, operational and structural integrity for any type of structure and any combination of materials. They describe actions, structural analyses, safety elements, characteristics, processes, design rules, dimensions, workmanship, quality control procedures and national performance requirements.

The best known and up-to-date standards for offshore structures are NORSOK, ISO, API, GL and DNV. They are mostly used in fixed offshore oil platforms but due to lack of standards for wind offshore jacket structures they are currently being used there too.
