This course comprises a number of exercises of increasing complexity that are designed to introduce you to the different aspects and features of the ESP-r system. These exercises are grouped within 3 skill levelsfoundation, intermediate and expert. You may therefore progress at a pace that matches your level of knowledge about the system and its capabilities. Throughout the course, it is appropriate to give consideration to important issues such as
the requirements for building performance
assessment;
the applicability of simulation and its relationship to design practice;
the translation of design intent to simulation tasks;
the translation of simulation outputs to practical actions;
user interface expectations in relation to a complex software application.
At various stages of the course you are required to undertake an assignment and return the outcome to your class tutor. Your first assignment follows.

As your use of the
ESP-r system deepens, you will start to generate model files and simulation
results. It will then be necessary to keep your file store tidy by deleting
unwanted files, locating related files in a single directory etc. To do this
you will need to know a few basic Unix
commands.
