Control capabilities

Aim To become familiar with the control options available in ESP-r.
Learning outcome Ability to impose arbitrarily complex control on building zones.

Task
Instructions

1. Investigate the available control options.

Refer to the on-line tutorial.

2. Create a control file corresponding to constant heating to a fixed temperature.

Begin by planning the schedule and setpoints for your control. How many periods are there? Constant heating would require one period starting at time zero. Decide on a setpoint and a heating capacity. What is being sensed in the zone? What is being actuated? Once you have noted these details proceed with defining a control for your zone.

In the Control section of the Model definition menu select zones and define a sensor, actuator and control law corresponding to maintain a constant temperature.

Test the control by invoking a simulation and observing the resulting temperature. If it does not maintain the setpoint then you will have to increase the heating capacity.

3. Create a control file corresponding to intermittent heating.

Plan the schedule and setpoints for your control (graphs are useful). How many periods are there and when does each start? Decide on setpoints and whether a different heating capacity might be required. Once you have noted these details proceed with defining the alternative control for your zone. Remember to make a backup of your previous control file (or remember to alter the name when you save your alternative control).

Add additional day periods to allow the temperature control to vary over time.

Test the intermittent control by invoking a simulation and observing the resulting temperatures. How long does it take to reach the setpoint when the heating first turns on?

Assignment
11

Simulate the Single zone exemplar and report the energy consumption for the period 14-21 February 21 inclusive. Note that the pre-defined control system currently corresponds to an office environment.

Now change the control system to correspond to a domestic environment:

weekdays
Ta = 18degC from 07.00 to 09.00
Ta = 21degC from 18.00 to 23.00

weekends
as weekdays +
Ta = 19degC from 09.00 to 18.00

Determine the new energy consumption using this control regime.

Report both results in an email to your tutor.
