Post Ocupancy Evaluation

Post occupancy evaluation can be defined as the act of analysing a building to test how well it works (EB, 2011). It is the means by which information about building performance, which encompasses the entire lifecycle of building from concept/design to occupation, is obtained. This can be fed back and applied to future projects/buildings and processes. POEs provide a structured review of the project/building delivery process with a review of its strategic, functional and operational performance during occupation (SFC, 2007).

Benefits of POEs include:

  1. Fine tuning and evaluating existing buildings
  2. Assessing functional suitability and fitness of building for intended purpose(s)
  3. Improving upon designs and procurement processes of future buildings
  4. Involvement of users

More importantly, POEs are (more) beneficial when information and lessons learned are made available (HEFCE, 2006) as they not only provide insights into problem resolution but are also useful for benchmarking.
