[Standby: the Kitchen]

In the kitchen most of us know that it is not practical to turn of the fridge or freezer before we go to bed. This does not mean that all appliances in the kitchen need to stay on all the time. Many appliances unnecessarily use electricity, mainly due to the fact that clocks on cookers, microwaves and remain on when we finish cooking.

Again these values can vary greatly from one type of cooker to another, see our Standby Electricity Consumption Guide. The standby power of kitchen ovens can vary from 18 to 6 watts, similarly washing machines can use any where between 10 and 2 watts whilst on standby.
The main contributors to standby electricity in the kitchen are ovens and microwaves, and washing machines whose switches can be hard to get. This example demonstrates the results from a common set of appliances that are typically left 'on -standby' all year round in the kitchen, also included are a TV and radio, which are often found in most kitchens or in dining rooms

Six appliances have been considered and potentially could be running up an unnecessary bill of £46 over the duration of a year by not being switched off properly. On average these appliances tend to consume less electricity whilst on standby and are likely to cost around £18 if left on standby all year

This is money down the drain and could be spent elsewhere.
