Reanalysis Data The first step of our methodology is download the reanalysis data of the zone we want to study. This can be done from the NCEP website We can then simply decide to plot the wind data with multiple variables as time series. The variables of interest are UGDRprs (West to East component of the wind) and VGRDprs (South to North component of the wind). The last thing to do is to select to period and the special box of interest. In this study, we systematically considered the period going from the first of January 1979 to the 28th of February 2006. This long period allow to take into account the short and the long-term variability of the wind. Once the two components of the wind are in our possession, they are transformed in order to make them compatible with WAsP. In order to do this, an Excel spreadsheet was created, and an algorithm used to produce the required output (3 columns: time (optional), wind speed and wind direction). (click for an example). Finally, the results were then saved as a simple text file that WAsP could read, as shown below.
