Methodology

The methodology originally planned to use during this project was arrived at logically.

  1. Use the information available on the internet to identify the potential sites with the highest wind speeds in the area considered.
  2. Use Google Earth and other map sources on the identified sites to validate potential of these sites.
(To achieve it, we have to consider all aspects mentioned in the section "effects of topography on wind speeds").
  3. Use the reanalysis data from the NCEP Website near the chosen sites in India as an input into WAsP.
  4. Use the shuttle data from the NASA Website giving contours and heights maps of the chosen sites as an input into WAsP.
  5. Run WAsP to get the wind speeds and direction distributions at the potential sites. We can also obtain from WAsP the prediction of the energy production of the sites.
  6. Conclude on the interest of the chosen sites.

This methodology would of course have to be validated before being put into practice. This was done by testing it on a well-known site in Scotland where a comparison of the actual production of the wind turbines with the prediction of the WAsP model could be made.
