For the purposes of analysis, it was assumed that the net heat and electricity output from the CHP systems would be used in Dalmarnock and offset carbon dioxide emissions. The digester at Dalmarnock would save 4,312 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, but only a fraction of it could be accounted for Dennistoun because the waste is taken from a much larger area. This means that the contribution to the Dennistoun community from this system is quite small as shown in Table 1.
A look at the embodied carbon dioxide of the Dalmarnock plant indicates that the digester is likely to generate enough renewable energy to offset its embodied carbon within a year.
