From its modest beginnings, the internet has grown into a worldwide provider of information, entertainment and communications that many people use on a daily basis both at work and in the home.
Those responsible for mapping the future of the internet have realised the economic potential of a medium that effectively breaks down conventional barriers of communication, allowing information to flow freely from one device to an other.
The next stage in the development is well underway, with broadband (continual net connection) and wireless technology usage increasing. The internet will effectively become a constant presence throughout the home, and will allow remote control and energy monitoring of appliences, shorter download times and increased access to entertainment in general.
The group will present a study in which it will be argued that the new technology should be embraced and used as an continual indoor air pollution monitoring service for the health and safety of the general public. They will first discuss the considerable need for such technology, then outline the underpinning scientific principles which make up the basis of the service, and finally describe the setup and implementation of the system hardware and software.
At each stage in the debate the group will describe the considerable social benifits associated with this application of the new technology.
The final deliverables will be a webpage containing background information, and descriptions of the services, and a presentation and demonstration of the new technology taking place on Thursday the 2nd May in the Collins building, University of Strathclyde.
