The demand
side reduction were evaluated thanks to the software ESP-r developed by
University of Strathclyde. The simulation was made on a 3-bedroom SSHA terraced house without any insulation and
single glazing throughout. We then implemented wall, floor and loft insulation
and double-glazing. The reduction of energy required to obtain a good thermal
comfort in the house through the day was 28% less. This equates to 9% reduction
of the energy requirements in Lochgilphead.
These new
figures are now the targets we have too reach when we come to decide on our
final system.



For this exercise, we first had to change from
the Economy 7 profile to an average UK profile. As we intend to put a district
heating system in Lochgilphead, it would not be sensible to keep the Economy 7
profile and try to match it. Hence we chose to try and match the UK average
profile, which we scaled so that the peaks and the area under the curve would
be the same.
