Conclusions

    • The potential for small scale renewable technologies in rural locations is great because of the natural resources available and climatic conditions.

    • By applying our scoring system to each case study we have proven that it is a useful tool in the first stage of narrowing down the technologies.

    • Our technical analysis successfully showed the potential energy supply for each technology. For the technically feasible technologies an economic and environmental analysis was also undertaken.

    • By matching the demand and supply and undertaking a cost analysis, a recommendation for the most suitable technology can be made.

    • Small scale renewable systems can provide substantial savings over conventional technologies.

    • Small scale renewables can make a larger contribution to the heating demand than to the electricity demand.

    • Energy efficiency measures will improve the potential of small scale renewable technologies by reducing the demand.
