Motivation:

The Thermal Energy Challenge

The thermal energy challenge refers to the de-carbonisation of space and hot water heating.  Despite receiving less attention than the de-carbonisation of electricity, space and hot water heating is responsible for 50.6% of today’s energy demand in G7 countries (1). Thus in order to meet ambitious Scottish Government carbon reduction targets of 42% by 2020 the issue of renewable thermal energy must be an integral part of any climate change mitigation strategy (2). The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) was introduced in order to promote sustainable heating.

This project looks at the retrofitting of a small scale micro grid, mirroring the problems faced when integrating renewable heating systems on larger scales.
