As well as the real power output of the wind farms, we were also given the yearly measurement data of 6 meteorological masts.

This data was used to run a simulation of the wind speed hitting a single theoretical wind turbine. The simulation was then repeated, this time using the reanalysis data for the region.

Below is the wind speed calculated using reanalysis data compared to the wind speed calculated using the real measured data.

Dounreay  With Roughness

Period June 2001 - August 2001
Wind speed calculated using reanalysis data compared to the wind speed calculated using measured data (at 40m) -4.9%

Year 2002
Wind speed calculated using the corresponding period of reanalysis data compared to the wind speed calculated using measured data (at 40m) -7.7%
Wind speed calculated using 27 years of reanalysis data compared to the wind speed calculated using measured data (at 40m) +0%

Beinn Tharsuinn

Period 13 March - 11 July 2003
Wind speed calculated using reanalysis data compared to the wind speed calculated using measured data (at 50m)
mast 1 -9.7%
mast 2 -7.2%
mast 3 -8.0%

Coldham

Period 22 May 2003 - 13 April 2004
Wind speed calculated using reanalysis data compared to the wind speed calculated using measured data (at 50m) -1.5%

Kentish Flats

Period 13 February 2003 - 18 January 2004
Wind speed calculated using reanalysis data compared to the wind speed calculated using measured data (at 50m) -8.2%

Here we see that the computer model underestimated the resources of the site by no more than 10%.
