RETScreen: this is a software managed by the CANMET Energy Technology Centre and can provide a very detailed cost analysis taking into account for example, feasibility study expenses, development expenses, engineering expenses, equipment costs, balance of the plant and other miscellaneous expenses. It also calculates the operation and maintenance costs along with some periodic costs (e.g. blades replacement). The software can be downloaded at www.retscreen.gc.ca free of charge. It is important to state that the default prices were replaced from actual prices of the Greek market.
HyCost: our own developed excel spreadsheet where the costs of the systems which produce and use Hydrogen are estimated. It consists of the “economic analysis” sheet which is very similar to the one of RETScreen and calculates initial and maintenance costs, of the “user defined inputs” sheet, where we can enter the outputs of the RETScreen cost analysis and vary some parameters such as the RE credit, the tax, the % of the EU grant etc, and finally of the “NPV table” sheet, were the Net Present Value of the project is calculated. We assumed that the fuel price is increasing linearly so that every 5 years it would be 2% more. The same assumption is used for the sell-price of electricity, since the alternative for electricity production is supposed to be diesel generators
