The Capture and Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide | | |
Greenhouse Gases
The earth's atmosphere is made up of mainly oxygen and nitrigen, with smaller amounts of other gases
either naturally occuring or man-made. However neither oxygen or nitrogen play any significant part
in the greenhouse effect. This greenhouse effect is caused by the
presance of water vapour, carbon dioxide and other gases which are emitted in smaller quanities. These
absorb the natural energy
radiation that leaves the earth's land and transfers between it, space and oceans. Changes in the quanities
of the gases can and do alter
the balance of these energy transfers. However some of the greenhouse gases are naturally occuring,
these are water vapour, carbon
dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and ozone. There are, however some that are mainly man-made, these being
those sustances that
contain flourine, cholrine or bromine.
The greenhouse gas that this project is interested in is carbon dioxide.
