The Capture and Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide | | |
Unmineable coal measures
Where the coal bed is suitable the CO2 can be injected into the coal bed, where it will be absorbed.
A by-product of this method would be the production of methane, which can be sold thereby offsetting
the cost of disposal of CO2.
Research is being undertaken into: the permeability of the coal, understanding the process of CO2 absorption
and a field experiment in
Poland.
There is the possibility of injecting non-pure CO2 into the coal bed, thereby reducing the cost of capture;
work on this was being carried
out in Canada. However the economics is not yet known.
