Investigating individual upgrades for different building forms

Aim

Investigate in detail individual upgrades for different building forms.

Learning
Outcome

To see in detail the effect of different factors on the carbon footprint of a building.

Task

Instructions

1. Establish a base case and modify using more detailed inputs

1. From the categories list, select the base case from the previous exercise eg, Semi-det 2sto Ex1.

2. Click ‘select base’ button to select this as the base case.

3. Click ‘carbon rater’ to view carbon rating for this case.

4. Open detailed inputs and modify the floor area value and review effect on energy and carbon (Note: the tool does not allow some geometric parameters to be altered from the base case).

5. Clear base and clear detailed inputs.

6. Open detailed inputs and modify the floor area value and review effect on energy and carbon. Clear detailed inputs, review again.

2. Improve insulation

1. From categories list select the Detached pre-1981 low efficiency gas boiler. Set this as base and archive i.e. Detached 1 sto pre81.

2. In detailed inputs, select wall upgrade to U=0.3 W/m2K, record the % improvement in the carbon footprint (archive i.e. Detached 1 sto pre81 wall0.3.). Clear detailed inputs. Clear base case.

3. From the categories list, select Detached pre-1981 low eff gas boiler, select 2 storey. Set as the base case.

4. In detailed inputs, select wall upgrade to U=0.3 W/m2K, record the % improvement in carbon footprint (archive i.e. Detached 2 sto pre81 wall0.3.). Clear detailed inputs. Clear base case.

5. Compare the relative effect of a wall upgrade on the carbon footprint for 1 and 2 storey dwellings.

3. Improve systems

1. From the categories list, select the Detached pre-1981 low efficiency gas boiler. Set as the base case and archive i.e. Detached 1 sto pre81.

2. In detailed inputs, improve the boiler efficiency to 92%. Archive i.e. Detached 1 sto pre81 boiler92%). Clear detailed inputs.

3. From the renewable section in the main input section select a wind turbine (WT 2m). Archive i.e. Detached 1 sto pre81 WT 2m 4.4m/s.

4. In detailed inputs change the windspeed (up and down) and review the effect on the energy generated by the turbine and the cost savings.

5. Clear detailed inputs. Clear base case.
