real case

North Sea Beatrice Platform as OREC

Conclusion

Financial

We have established that approximately 34 million kWhr/year of electricity can be generated from 4 x 2 mW turbines, individually located on each platform. This will generate turnover of £1.25 million per annum, £590k of this being used to cover payback of equipment over a 20 year period thereby giving a return of £660k per annum which can be set off against maintenance of the turbine, platform and other related costs.

The existance of suitable electricial cabling to transmit the electricity offshore to the mainland grid is of major advantage as this has reduced the capital costs considerably, making OREC feasible.

Technical

The location of turbines on each of the platforms identified appears feasible however a full strucutural analysis and requalification check would have to be carried out to determine this fact.

Environmental

There appears to be no major environmental impact of re-using Beatrice as OREC due to the low impact of offshore wind turbines.
