Financial & Carbon Saving Analysis
The financial & carbon saving methodology was designed to allow a comparison to be made between the various models tested, which would allow us to compare which was the best value for money and which would have the biggest environmental impact.
The diagram above outlines the methodology used to analyze the financial and carbon savings of each technology. We decided to look at capital costs, energy saving costs, payback periods of each of the technologies, internal rate of returns and lastly the carbon saving achieved by implementing each model. We would then compare and contrast the results in order to decide which model was best.
The model was divided into 2 Categories, shading devices and glazing systems. For shading devices we would like to compare the performance of the steady horizontal shading system and the dynamic shading systems. In this case we did not further evaluate the steady tilt shading system because it is not considered suitable to install regarding its visual impact on the exterior of the building and because it would block the outside view from the interior of the building. So we analysed the steady horizontal and dynamic tilt systems only. Another category which we mentioned is glazing systems and we explored triple glazing, thermochromic and electhrochromic glazing for comparison between these smart glazing technologies and basic glazing systems.
