The Capture and Sequestration of Carbon Dioxide

bullet1 Case Study
bullet2 The Environmental Reasons

bullet3 Emissions

In 1997 the UK emissions of carbon dioxide was 154 mega-tonnes of Carbon (MtC), the prediction of carbon dioxide in 2050 is between 103 and 167 MtC. In June 2000 the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution recommended to the Government that the UK should look at reducing carbon dioxide levels by 60% by 2050 from the then current levels. This would bring the UK in line with the global agreeded level of an atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration of 550 parts per million (ppm). This would mean that the UK would have to reduce the carbon dioxide emission to about 62 MtC, which means that the UK will have to achieve in 2050 a reduction of 41 to 105 MtC. The 60% value is an over all reduction, and as such some sectors will not be required to met that level of reduction. The sectors involved are domestic, transport, industry and services. The greatest looked for reductions are in the domestic and service sectors, this could be achieved by switching fuels and energy efficiency improvements.
