This course comprises a number of exercises that are designed to introduce you to the different aspects and features of the HEM tool.

What is HEM?

HEM is a flexible approach to mapping the possible carbon and energy performance of a dwelling. It has pre-simulated results embedded as a data table in the tool and applies the appropriate system and context calculations to provide instant energy, carbon and cost results. Each individual dwelling is described by a specific combination of parameters which allows a discrete model to be identified which is then used to represent the dwellings behaviour.

How to download HEM?

1. Download HEM installer from http://www.esru.strath.ac.uk/
2. Run Installer and point the browser to your home directory. The Installer creates a shortcut on the Desktop and Programs menu,
3. The following directories will be created:
..\Esru\HEM\bin (for HEM executable)
..\Esru\HEM\data (for data tables)
..\Esru\HEM\manuals

Note: If you are working on a machine without write permission to the C: drive, you will need to install and run HEM on a local drive where you have permission to write.

Structure of HEM

There are three main parts of HEM structure
1. Interface:
The Interface is used to pass the input variables to the calculation engine.
2. Calculation Engine:
The Calculation Engine runs and accesses data held in the tables.
3. Data tables:
Data tables hold parameter values such as costs, efficiencies, emission factors etc. and can be edited by the user if required.
