The intention is to impart an understanding of the issues surrounding design tool selection and application. What follows should not be interpreted as recommending any particular tool or modelling approach.

Key concepts

The following concepts should be considered when following this course.

• analysis versus design;
• range of design tools;
• single domain versus integrated approaches; and
• the applicability of tools in particular cases.

Course structure

The course is designed to be completed within 5 sessions each of 1 hour duration. You should use the first session to consider topics 1 and 2 below, sessions 2 through 4 to consider sections 3 through 8 and the final session to conclude. Note that you should apportion your time to the apportion your time between the different tools as a function of their complexity.
